Spectacular Mountain Train Journeys of India


The picturesque mountains of India have rail links that cut across the terrains of great natural beauty. The mountain railways of India consists of three railways. Darjeeling himalayan Railways, Nilgiri Mountain Railways and Kalka-Shimla Railways. The development of these railways in the 19th century had a profound influence on social and
economic development in many remote parts of India. The Darjeeling Himalayan railway is the
most remarkable of hill passenger railway in India. Popularly called the toy
train, it is a two feet narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri
and Darjeeling in West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881 the railway is about 86 kilometers long. It’s elevation levels vary from about 100 meters at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres at Darjeeling. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
consists of 45.88 kilometer of 1 meter gauge single track that connects Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam in the state of Tamil Nadu. The construction of this railway was completed in 1908. In the beginning the train was named as
Blue Mountain Express but later was changed to the Nilgiri Express. The Darjeeling Himalayan railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the Kalka-Shimla
railway are on the World Heritage List. Together they offer significant
incidences of the role of Technology in assuring social and economic development in to the isolated but culturally vibrant
