Chinese soldiers near the Sela Pass during the 1962 Sino-Indian War On our way to Nuranang Falls The spectacular Nuranang Falls The waterfall is around 300 ft high It is the Nuranang river which is falling The Nuranang river originates from the Northern slopes of the Sela Pass And it falls into the Tawang river This waterfall is yet unknown to many travelers It came to limelight when a song from a Bollywood movies was shot here The movie is “Koyla” And the song is “Tanhai tanhai tanhai” featuring Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit Tawang is a town in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh in India situated at an elevation of approximately 10,000 ft Tawang town is the district headquarters of the Tawang district Tawang Monastery is the most visited place by the tourists coming in the town Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet Tawang Monastery was founded by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in 1680-1681 Tawang town is situated in the valley of the Tawang River The monastery is situated near the top of a mountain with a commanding view of the Tawang River valley Within the Monastery complex there are 65 residential buildings The full name of the monastery is Tawang Galdan Namgye Lhatse ‘Ta’ means “horse”, ‘wang’ means “chosen”, which together forms the word ‘Tawang’ meaning “the location selected by horse” The library of the monastery has valuable old scriptures, mainly Kangyur and Tengyur The monastery, built like a large mansion, is triple storied with a large assembly hall The monastery has a school and its own water supply facility and a centre for Buddhist cultural studies Bum La Pass is located about 37 km away from Tawang Town in Arunachal Pradesh at the Indo-China border above 15,400 ft from sea level It is often covered with heavy snow throughout the year It is one of the most off-beat passes in the world It is the pass from where Dalai Lama entered India escaping from Tibet This is a beautiful place This location is off the beaten track for those who love roaming in the wilderness It is a fantastic place for a picnic of a lifetime if you move out of Tawang by around 7am and carry in everything yourself Visit by civilian tourist of India is permissible with permission from the Indian Army The track is very treacherous, only SUVs advisable and that too only on clear weather day with no snowfall or rainfall It is one of the four officially agreed BPM (Border Personnel Meeting) point between Indian Army and People’s Liberation Army of China for regular consultations and interactions between the two armies which helps in defusing face-offs There is a hut on the India side where border meetings are held by the rival armies A special permit is required to visit Bum La Pass The Permits can be requested at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District and the same has to be stamped in the Indian army cantonment of Tawang It is also to be noted that without the army stamp you will not be allowed through the numerous check posts on the way Created by falling rocks, boulders and trees in an earthquake The Sangestar Tso lake (lake is called Tso in Tibetan) that featured Madhuri Dixit (Bollywood actress) in the movie Koyla as a result this lake is sometimes also called Madhuri lake The lake is about 20 km from Tawang town about 7 km beyond the bifurcation of road leading to Bum La Pass This location is off the beaten track for those who love roaming in the wilderness It is a fantastic place for a picnic of a lifetime if you move out of Tawang by around 7am and carry in everything yourself This is a heavenly place We started from Tawang in the morning We have eaten soupy maggie in the breakfast in the cold morning This is the last week of October So we got spectacular views of the Sela Lake under the blue sky The distance between human settlements are very far so the journeys are normally very tiring in Arunachal Pradesh There are many tourist circuits in Arunachal Pradesh across 83,700 sq.
